Nutrition is an inexact science. There have been a number of flip flops over the years as certain foods fall in or out of favor. We are hopefully getting closer to the nutritional truth. Unfortunately, there are many individuals in the field that hold onto antiquated theories. The top 5 contenders for the worst diet advice in history will be examined this week. The first of the five worst pieces of nutritional advice: Throw Away The Egg Yolks, The Most Nutritious Part Of The Egg - Eggs are among the most nutritious foods on the planet. The nutrients in a whole egg contain all the building blocks needed to turn a single fertilized cell into an entire baby chicken. Cholesterol is essential for formation of the brain, the nervous system and many hormones. Because egg yolks are high in cholesterol, people believed that they would raise cholesterol in the blood. For this reason, mainstream nutrition professionals often recommend that we limit our egg consumption to 2-6 whole eggs per week. Most of them say we can eat more eggs than that as long as we make sure to throw away the yolks. That is pretty much the worst thing you could do, because the yolks contain most of the nutrients. The whites are mostly just protein. Many studies have looked at whole egg consumption and blood cholesterol. For 70% of people, eggs have no effect on cholesterol levels. In the other 30% (termed hyper-responders), egg yolks raised HDL (the good) cholesterol and turn the LDL particles into the large, fluffy kind, which is not harmful. Other studies, which included hundreds of thousands of people, have looked at whole egg consumption and the risk of heart disease in healthy people and found no association between the two. Let’s not forget that eggs have many amazing benefits. They are loaded with high-quality protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Eggs contain almost every nutrient that your body needs. They’re very high in choline, a brain nutrient that 90% of people don’t get enough of. They contain Lutein and Zeaxanthin, powerful antioxidants that lower the risk of various eye diseases. Eggs are also among the most weight-loss-friendly foods that you can eat. Replacing a grain-based breakfast with eggs, can make you feel fuller and help you to you eat less and lose weight. To top it all off, eggs are inexpensive, easily prepared and taste great. Whole eggs are pretty much nature’s perfect food. All eggs are not created equal. As a minimum, you should have eggs from chickens that dont consume genetically modified grains. Ideally, the eggs should be fresh, organic and the chickens should live their lives outdoors, roaming freely.
