Nutrition is an inexact science. There have been a number of flip flops over the years as certain foods fall in or out of favor. We are hopefully getting closer to the nutritional truth. Unfortunately, there are many individuals in the field that hold onto antiquated theories. The top 5 contenders for the worst diet advice in history will be examined this week. The firth of the five worst pieces of nutritional advice: Replace Natural Butter With Processed, Trans Fat Laden Margarine - The old Chiffon Margarine commercial from the 1970s said that it isnt nice to fool Mother Nature. How true they were, but for the wrong reason. They were talking about fooling Mother Nature because the margarine tasted like butter. Margarine, with its trans-fat, from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, is much less healthy to eat than butter. Fooling Mother Nature wasnt such a healthy idea after all! The irony was that it was thought at the time that margarine was a much healthier choice over butter! Mainstream nutrition has gotten many things wrong. However, the horrible advice to replace natural butter with processed margarine may be the worst. Look at the ingredients list for margarine. It isn’t food; it’s a combination of chemicals that looks and tastes like food. Margarine increases heart disease risk compared to butter. The same can be said about processed fats and oils. Multiple studies have shown that they contribute to heart disease and kill people. The studies say that these processed fats and oils increase heart disease risk, so it makes sense that we should avoid them if we don’t want to get heart disease. Why are some mainstream nutrition organizations are still telling us to eat margarine? The science and studies proving that butter is better have been out for many years. When we replace traditional foods like butter and meat with processed pseudo-foods, we become fat and sick.
