Nyanza province rests on the eastern edge of Lake Victoria and is bounded by Western and Rift Valley Provinces. It has an international boundary with Uganda and Tanzania. Kisumu, the economic centre of the Province, is Kenya’s third city. The city and surrounding areas offer enormous economic and investment potential, which span from finance, agriculture, agro-processing, dairy, aqua-culture, mining, hospitality, water sports, media and manufacturing. Fishing is the pillar of the economy and Lake Victoria produces over 90% of the fish in Kenya, the dominant species being the Nile Perch, which is used for filleting. Catching and processing of the Nile Perch has grown from a local activity to a major export industry. There are six major industrial fish processing companies in the province. Growth in this sub-sector is expected to continue, taking advantage of the lifting of the EU ban, and the emergence of markets in Israel and Dubai for Kenyan fish products. Other Industries are paper and carton manufacturing, steel works and cement production. Tea and coffee processing factories make Nyanza one of the country’s leading agri-business regions. Other agricultural produce include rice, bananas, beans, maize and cotton. The only molasses plant in Kenya is also found in the province. Mining resources include alluvial gold, granite and other construction stones. The completion of Japanese government funded Sondu Miriu Hydro Power Station located in the province is expected to add some 60 megawatts of power to the country’s National Power Grid. Nyanza province also has a vibrant tourism industry. Lush vegetation, aqua tourism and an abundance of wildlife make for plenty sightseeing.
