Nā momi o Niihau, the famed Niihau shells of Hawaii are the only type of shell jewelry in the world that can be insured. It was so prized by the Hawaiian alii that it was not called pūpū, the generic name for any sort of marine shell but momi, which is also the term for pearl. Momi of Niihau have over 30 different types, 4-6 different grades (depending on the shell type) and over 11 major color shades-- each with a specific name and specific meaning.
