O.K. Y’all, Harry Selvin is in the house today (Monday, August 4, 2014) starting at 7:00 p.m. in Newbury Park, California! … Some say BIG BANDS are making a comeback . . . I say, for those who love the music, they never left! Can you imagine the challenges of putting and keeping these big hunks of audio heaven, mega-tons of music fun together? I say hats off to Harry Selvin, Jimmy McConnell, Diz Mullins and so many more leading the charge to keep us enjoying the BIG BAND sound! Consider what they must go through …too many musicians to fit into two vehicles, can’t find a space big enough to practice, 20 books of sheet music!! Who’s paying for that? … And what about coordinating rehearsals – finding a common time for 20 musicians to practice?! Not to mention having to scramble to fill in where one of the 20 had to cancel. Still, we must admit, many of us hold the music of big bands close to our hearts as that which played on radios across the country as Grandma and Grandpa enjoyed their first kiss! Oh how sweet to feel and hear the swell of multiple horns together filling up a room, often playing the melody of one of those many tunes made famous as the sound track a favorite old movie classic. . .”Play it again Sam” ….. “Judy, Judy, Judy” ….. There is so much to love about the big band if only we’ll partake. With our disbelief willfully suspended for a time, we’re placed back where dating meant a trip to the corner soda shop and “you’d better have the daughter home by midnight young man!” Then and now, where the big band plays, we can be impressed and excited by the visuals – brass rows bouncing reflections of stage lights, in perfect meter, throughout the room and in sync with dancing lovers – many still together since the 40s and 50s when this music filled dance halls across the country. WELL folks, here is another chance to partake of the wonderfullness of the BIG BAND and yet another excuse for me to get dolled-up, 50s style.
