OBITUARY: William A. Steinmetz III was born in Clarksburg, WV on February 6, 1951. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Louise Coffey of Centerville, his sisters Margaret Sunny Durham and Jessica (Richard) Sannan of Germantown, his sister Marie (Larry) Bryant of Centerville and his brothers Jim (Sue) and Jerry (Peggy) of Germantown, eleven nieces and nephews and fifteen great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by numerous wonderful friends who gave him richness and joy in his life, including Keith Davis, Sharon Babb and Janet Phillips of Dayton and Tom Saettel of New York. On August 15, 2014, the world lost a shining star – our brother. He was Mr. Steinmetz to his students and Billy to his friends and family. Over the years, hundreds have called him teacher, mentor, and friend. He was a good-hearted, generous man with a genuine love for small dogs. Over the years he had several rescue miniature dachshunds. Bill began his teaching career in 1974 at Fairview Middle School and was Director of Creative Writing at his beloved Stivers School for the Performing Arts when he passed away. We miss you already, Billy – your laugh, your sarcasm, your kindness to strangers on the street, your ability to take young people and build in them the eagerness to learn and the determination to make themselves better in life. You were unique, truly one-of-a-kind. You faced these final days with quiet acceptance and a strong determination to keep your family at peace. Thank you for showing us things in this world that we may have never seen except through your eyes. Thank you for thousands of memories and for all you were to those who had the privilege of knowing you. In honor of Bill’s request, there will be no services. Please keep him in your hearts and in your memories. Words of encouragement, and stories of your memories for a Tribute Wall, may be sent to Erin Dooley, Stivers School for the Performing Arts, 1313 East Fifth Street, Dayton, OH 45402. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Seedling Foundation at the above address, a 501c3 program in which Mr. Steinmetz was highly involved. Accommodations by Dalton Funeral Home, Germantown, OH.
