OBUH GUBER; UDUAGHANS ATTEMPT TO CAJOLE UPU LEADERSHIP AS UDUAGHAN BEGS FOR ONE TERM FOR OBUH The attempt by the Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, to cajole the leadership of the Urhobo apex body, the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), to accept his anointed successor, Mr. Tony Obuh as the Governor of Delta State come 2015 has hit the rock. The Governor is said to have promised UPU that if supported by the Urhobo nation; Obuh will do one term, but a delegation of the unwavering UPU had told the Governor that on the Uvweiamuge Declarations Urhobo stand. It would be recalled that the UPU at a press conference on November 4, 2014 at the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Okere-Urhobo, reiterated its earlier position taken March 2014 by the Urhobo nation, affirming that all registered political parties, including the PDP, the ruling party in Delta State banking on the majority Urhobo votes in 2015 must pick their governorship flag bearers/ candidates from the Urhobo nation which was condensed into what is now known as the ‘Uvweiamuge Declaration’. Following the press conference and the publications in the media which jolted the presidency and the Governor, the Presidency had sent a truce delegation to the UPU leadership with subsequent directive by the presidency to Governor Uduaghan to reach out to the UPU leadership to resolve the logjam as the President is not ready to loss the Urhobo block vote. Parts of the communiqué of the conference is that, “In the 2011 general elections, for instance, the average numerical votes delivered by the Urhobo people for the President (Goodluck Jonathan) was well above 820,000. This figure is almost comparatively double of the votes realised from the North and South senatorial districts of the state put together, which were hardly up to 500,000 votes. In fact, that of Delta North, to be more specific, was 149,000 votes only. It must be emphasised here that ‘democracy is a game of number’. “Consequent upon the above undisputed facts, the Urhobo, resident within the shores of Delta State and beyond, still insist on the Uvwiamughe Declaration that ‘we will vote for any political party that gives its governorship ticket to an Urhobo person’. This we will do in the various elections, including the presidential. ADVOCATE gathered that following the presidency directive to Dr. Udughan, the governor reluctantly invited the UPU leadership for a meeting at Asaba yesterday. The meeting however failed to yield the desired result as the UPU delegation refused to give up the Urhobo governorship quest, maintaining that on the “Uvwiamughe Declaration we stand.” This position our government source said allegedly infuriated the governor who is hell-bent on forcing Tony Obuh down the throat of Deltans. Our government house source who spoke to us in confidence stated that the governor tried fruitlessly to convince the UPU delegation led by the Secretary General, appealing that should they support his anointed candidate Mr. Tony Obuh on condition that he (Obuh) will do only one term and hand over to an Urhobo, but this explanation did not convince the UPU delegation, because the governor had in the past made a lot of unfulfilled promises to the Urhobo nation. Our source added that following this development the governor and his foot soldier in Urhobo land, have perfected plan B tch the UPU executive and to cause disunity amongst them, in order to break their resolve, because according to him, the spirit of oneness presently prevailing in the union is giving the governor some concern. To achieve this nefarious agenda against the Urhobo nation, the Governor has allegedly instructed the Chairman, Delta State Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) who have been allegedly founding the Obuh governorship project, through the IGR, to release to huge sums of money to buy up support of the UPU leadership.o pou Our source further stated that thougvernor.h the governor pushing had on this option, he is however worried about the strong stands of the UPU over the Delta go dna-nigeria/obuh-guber-uduaghans-attempt-ca…/
