OCEAN TOWNSHIP — A Trenton man was charged with aggravated assault after police said he beat a woman so brutally at the Wanamassa Garden Apartments that her teeth were knocked out and she had to be taken to the hospital, township police said Thursday. Charles Fowler Sr., 55, was taken into custody Wednesday in Trenton by members of the township’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, assisted by Members of the NY/NJ U.S. Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force’s Monmouth/Ocean County Team. Police responded shortly after 11 p.m. Jan. 10 to an apartment in the 1500 block of Allen Avenue after getting a report of an assault, according to Lt. Kevin A. Faller, a spokesman for the township deparment. Faller said Fowler beat the woman during an argument. Fowler punched the woman in the head, face and upper body — causing the loss of teeth and internal bleeding around her eye, Faller said. Fowler ran away and investigators tracked him to Trenton, Faller said. The victim was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment of her injuries, Faller said. Fowler was taken into custody without incident and charged with aggravated assault and criminal restraint, Faller said. Bail was set at $100,000 with no 10 percent option by the township Municipal Court Judge Timothy McGoughran, he said. Fowler was sent to the Monmouth County jail in Freehold Township after failing to post bail. He remained in jail Friday, according to the jail website. Township Patrolmen Alon Bercovicz, Randy Slawsky, Luke Sciallo, Kevin Redmond and Detective Sgt.John Green and Detective Matthew Jackiewicz were credited in the investigation that led to the arrest, Faller said.
