OCTOBER 21 GATHERING TOGETHER I have always loved going to - TopicsExpress

OCTOBER 21 GATHERING TOGETHER I have always loved going to church for as long as I can remember. As a child, about seven or eight years old, someone always came by on Sunday morning to pick us up for Sunday School and church. I continued to go as often as I was able and still attend regularly to this day. My week is not complete without attending Sunday School and church. A churchgoer wrote a letter to the editor of the newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. Ive gone for 30 years now, he wrote, and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I cant remember a single one of them. So I think Im wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all. The following week, a real controversy developed in the Letters to the Editor column, much to the delight of the editor. The controversy escalated and went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: Ive been married for 30 years now. In that time, my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this: They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today! The older I get and the more I join together with others to praise and worship Jesus, the more I realize there is definitely something about being with other believers - growing together, experiencing life together as a family, loving God and loving each other. The writer of Hebrews encourages the saints of God in Hebrews 10:25 that we should not stop gathering together with other believers, as some had deveoped a habit of doing. Instead, we must continue to encourage each other even more as we see the day of the Lord drawing near. See you in church next week! Carolyn Benesh 2014
