OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL NATIONAL POLICE SERVICE NAIROBI – KENYA P R E S S R E L E A S E SECURITY SITUATION IN KERICHO AND KISUMU COUNTIES Early today, 8th March 2014, clashes erupted between the Luo and Kipsigis communities, which are neighbouring each other in the Nyakach and Kerich West Districts areas respectively. The clashes apparently were occasioned by the death of one community member who had been allegedly been accused by members from the other of having stolen some livestock. The deceased person was coming from a drinking spree in the company of a colleague, when they lost their way and were attacked for suspicions of being rustlers. They were subjected to mob injustice, leading to his death. His colleague went and raised alarm, which resulted into tension, ultimately culminating to the retaliatory attack by members of the Kipsigis community against the Luo community. This attack has led to the death of two innocent people and the injuring of three people who are admitted in hospitals. Nine houses have been confirmed burned as well as a sizeable sugar plantation which has also been destroyed. Following this attack, the NPS has, dispatched officers from all Services to the area to help in the restoration of the situation on the ground. I have also directed the two Deputy Inspector Generals to lead a team of senior officers to go to the ground to assess the situation. I further wish to send a strong message and warning to all members of the public to desist from taking law into their hands. Where there are disputes or misunderstanding, then they should be addressed amicably, and where necessary, any acts crime or criminal in nature should be reported to the law enforcement agencies for quick action, including investigations. The elders and local leaders should continue preaching peace and harmony among their populations for the sake of cohesiveness and development in the area through public barazas. Members of the public should also cease fighting immediately and embrace peaceful co-existence as they have always done. Crackdown on illicit brews is being carried out, as this trade is a contributory factor to crime, insecurity and disharmony among the citizens. Thank you, and may God Bless Kenya. DAVID M.
