OFFICIAL RESPONSE FROM CPS UPPER ADMIN: SUTHERLAND HAS SEEN - TopicsExpress

OFFICIAL RESPONSE FROM CPS UPPER ADMIN: SUTHERLAND HAS SEEN SUBSTANTIAL GROWTH IN CRITICAL INDICATORS OF SUCCESS. In hopes of stopping the spread of misinformation that would have our community believe that Sutherland is on the decline, I asked CPS CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett to give a definitive answer to how state test scores should be read. She forwarded this question to John Barker, CPS Chief Accountability Officer. See his response here. ** Good evening, The problem in comparing ISAT scores from the state report card is that a major change in cut scores occurred in 2013 and because of that, meets/exceeds scores dropped state-wide. Youll find this pattern reflected in the schools scores, as well as state scores. Comparing the 2012-13 results with 2011-12 results and assuming a decrease in relative performance is not appropriate. Scores on the School Profile Report suggest strong growth in both reading and math. Sutherland has also shown a reduction in suspensions and strong 5Essentials results. While we take no position in LSC election matters, the School Profile Report data are indeed reliable and indicate substantial growth in critical indicators of school performance at Sutherland in the 2012-13 school year. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of further assistance. John Barker ** Dear Dr. Byrd Bennett, The Sutherland community would very much appreciate your help in clearing up some confusion over our official test scores. Incumbent Bulldog LSC members claim that the official test scores Sutherland received from CPS, which show a bump in student achievement that helped our schools ranking increase from level 2 to level 1 in the past year, are unreliable and should be disregarded. They claim that instead we should look at State scores, which they say show a drop in performance. This supposed decline in our students performance is one of the reasons they cite to support their decision to not renew principal Gannons contract. When I look at our official school data from the link below, I see that our childrens performance is strong and improving. There has been much confusion and debate over how to read these scores, especially since incumbent candidates are citing our schools decline in performance as a campaign issue. Could you please look at this data and help to clear up confusion? Does Sutherlands official state data show that the performance of Sutherland students is in decline, or is our students performance strong and improving? We would appreciate a prompt response to this question as the LSC election is Monday. Thank you very much for your help, Corinne Rose Sutherland Parent ISAT Scores sutherlandschool.org/pdf/2013_Performance_Policy_Schlid_ES_610195.pdf
