However, KeeleSU can confirm that the University Council has approved the proposals to increase postgraduate fees by up to 54%. KeeleSU response to the University Council’s decision to increase postgraduate fees at Keele. As KeeleSU Elected Officers, we would like to thank everyone who joined us in solidarity to voice our opposition to the proposed rises in postgraduate tuition fees here at Keele. We would like to make it clear that KeeleSU does not support the outcome of this morning’s meeting of University Council, which will see postgraduate tuition fees rise to a level which is unaffordable for most prospective postgraduate students. Scrutinising access, as well as promoting affordable higher education, is a key mission not just of the national student movement, but of each individual Students’ Union. We have championed the national cause for a fairer system of postgraduate funding in the UK and believe that – as your representatives – we were right to challenge any decision that may make the excellent postgraduate student experience at Keele less affordable in the future. This is why we took a stand together this morning. As we were being vocal outside, we are certain that Vic, our President, was championing students’ views in her role as a member of University Council inside; as a Councillor, Vic is bound by the collective decision that was made today. We are, however, disappointed that the discussion inside, our considered demonstration and proactive campaign in partnership with the Keele Postgraduate Association (KPA) – albeit organised at short notice – did not lead Keele University Council to rethink its stance on postgraduate fees. As a movement, we are facing a national battle; it is in winning the small battles that we pave the way for big victories, and we will do everything we can as a Students’ Union to ensure fair access to all higher education degrees here at Keele, as well as continuing to champion the national cause for high quality affordable postgraduate education.
