OK, 2nd rant of the week. Dear Canadians, Why do you put up with this garbage from the cell phone companies???? Went in to get a couple months pre-paid. The cheapest option was $45 a month with basically nothing included. 500mb of data. Most plans run about $80 a month and you still only get 1GB of data. The excuse that you all seem to buy is that Canada is a big country and its expensive to service it all. However, 80% of Canadians live in about 10% of it. And, if you go even 5 feet of the highway theres no service. So, yes, it may be expensive to operate across the country, but there isnt coverage across the country. The real reason why they charge you an arm and a leg is because 1) you just accept it and keep paying up like suckers, and 2) because there is no competition. In fact, last year when Verizon was trying to move in to the market, the big three (Telus, Bell and Rogers) ran an add together to push public opinion towards moving them out. To me, that sounds like a monopoly. Beyond that, even the smaller companies are all owned by the big three or have to use their towers. Its a monopoly, or close to it. They understand that if they dont compete with each other, they will all gain, because Canadians are too willing to be taken advantage of. In Ireland, I paid 25Euros a month for unlimited everything. In South Africa, you pay as you go and pay about $8 for 1GB. In Iceland, one of the most expensive countries Ive ever been (and likely just as underpopulated as Canada) I paid $10 for 1gb of data or $22 for 5gb of data. In Switzerland, its about $35-40 for nearly unlimited everything. We wont even talk about how when I was driving my scooter down Africa I would get perfect 3G data no matter how far away from Civilization I was, with a few exceptions, and it was cheap. The excuses youre cell phone companies are telling you, Canada, are lies. If you want real change in Canada, its time to start supporting the idea of bringing in American companies to produce this competition. Its embarrassing that its coming to that. Also, if you want to call me in the 3 months that Ill be in Canada, you wont be able to. I wasnt going to pay the $60 a month for 1gb of data and hardly any calling on a pre-paid plan. I know you all need your cell phones, but if you want to stop getting these $400 bills for overusing your data, you have to start demanding change rather than just letting yourselves be pushed around. Theres no way your cell phone bills should be the same as your monthly grocery bills, Canada. That said, if youre OK being bent over by the cell phone companies, by all means, keep taking it. I dont live here anymore. If youre tired of this, too, please start standing up for yourselves. You deserve better.
