OK...I am getting obsessed....every Asian I meet in the institute I ask...What script you guys have in your language..roman or your own...Today in a Caribou coffee shop I met two Filipino men. I asked them, what script you use...they said English...I was interested and asked them more. It seems till their grandparents generation they were having their own script and then they changed to Roman. They also added that they wish they know their indigenous script. I talked to another Japanese colleague, whom I have mentioned before. The man who carries silence with him, just like the Japanese movies (A Romanian colleague commented, nothing happens in a Japanese movie for a long time, and one need to sit and wait). It seems in 1700s the Portuguese visitors started using roman alphabets for Japanese language. Since the Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages are too complicated to get confined with roman letters, they dropped that idea. Still its being used by the foreigners who are visiting Japan for easy and temporary communication. Now all this research started, because there is a cute funny writer in Tamil who few days ago suggested that Tamils should start using roman letters.A group of people really take him seriously in my province and another group ridicule him, For me he is cute and funny and some of my friends here know that I adore cute and funny men, in addition, this guy is also eccentric and has a spiritual touch in his writings, what more you need in a man?? :) The Tamil society as usual created an online revolution against this guy (actually many without reading what he wrote) and I really started wondering if what he said makes sense or not. The Turkish changed their script for a political reason, perhaps most of the languages which changed to roman script, did it for a political or strategic reason. When the Soviet Union broke up, many Eastern European countries began using the Roman alphabet instead of the Cyrillic alphabet....is it really necessary for Tamils to do it??...will it help the relocated Tamils all over the world, especially the Sri lankan Tamil kids, who had no opportunity to learn the language but very good in speaking it... Well its a topic of research by itself and I would like my other Indian friends to add their two cents to this topic. The writer claims if all the south Indian languages have the roman script, its going to be cool, because they are 70% similar to each other...btw I have no clue how this number popped up in his mind....will using roman or Latin alphabets bring all the Indian languages together??? when I flue from Chennai to Dubai there was a dialogue in a Marathi movie where two students were discussing the script for Marathi and Hindi is almost the same, but why Hindi is so difficult to learn eventually its not just the script I assume.
