OK...I need my girlfriends - STAT! Just said goodbye to my youngest son - moving to California! May the winds carry you to your biggest dreams! Fly safe and fly well my son! November 7, 2013 “The Empty Nest” On this rainy day of November I am thankful for my youngest son, Dillon. Today is not by any means an ordinary day. Today is a challenging day - the first day of my transition as a Mother of the “Empty Nest”. My 3rd and last son – off on a new adventure, moving to California. As his truck and trailer were loaded top to bottom with every item he owns, I stood on the porch with the reality that this day indeed is happening, wanting to say “ok – unpack everything”!! I hugged him tightly just as I did the very first day of his life – but this time, I had to let go. The process of letting go of one’s children as they grow up is not one easy to prepare for. As much as a mother loves her children, she must endure, at many stages of their growth, the pain of losing them. Losing them to the previous stage – from being completely dependent on you to gradually sprouting their wings of independence – to jumping off and taking flight. The inevitable “cutting of the ties” culminates when that day does arrive for her children to leave home. I never thought about what my mother must have endured with 9 of us – going through the process one by one and what it must have felt like when I – her youngest and the last left the nest. I think today – I understand. With a heavy heart, a lump in my throat and typing through flooded eyes – the house is now completely silent, with only the hum of the dryer as my company! How do you parents do this?! Soon I know I will find fillers of noise and pre-occupation, but it seems this will be a long journey. I will start slow – with an anticipated trip to California in a few days to see him and get him settled – or more so for my own benefit! Cheers to all you parents who have endured the empty nest! Hug your babies and don’t miss a single moment of their life! Off I go on my own new adventure – one day at a time!
