OK, Im back.....as I indicated to all of you I spoke to Mayor Paul Grenier this morning. He returned my phone call from yesterday and we had a congenial conversation and he pointed out that the image I had used was depicting the wrong vehicle. He sent me two emails, one which was the picture I posted and the other from the LENCO CORPORATION showing exactly what theyre trying to spend $275,000 in grant money on! NOT WANTING TO MISREPRESENT ANYTHING and attempting to be factual I took down the original photo and replaced it with the one showing our Mayor, Councilmembers and Police Chiefs WANTS & NEEDS. So, Im out shoveling the driveway and Berlin PD Police Chief Peter Morency called me. IN THE INTEREST OF FULL DISCLOSURE FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DONT KNOW, I was a Berlin Police Officer (later Sergeant) for 11 years (1980-1991) Chief Morency and I have always been on friendly terms, at one time those terms were battered and bruised because of an issue they failed to address concerning another matter. The bottom line is that we can speak totally honestly to each other and there are no raised voices and no interrupting each other to make a point. I WANT TO CLEAR UP AN ERROR I MADE IN A STATEMENT HERE AND NOW........I stated on a post that the BPD doesnt do any COMMUNITY POLICING, I was 100% wrong in that statement. Chief Morency read from a list of the things they do and I was amazed at the involvement they have in our community. THIS DOES NOT ABSOLVE Chief Morency, The Mayor or Council from the crux of our argument that we do not need a Bearcat in Berlin NH. I felt that to maintain my personal principles that error had to be rectified and now it has been to my own satisfaction. FOR THOSE OF YOU STILL READING HERE IS THE PART WHERE I THINK IT GETS GOOD!..........Chief Morency is set in his way, hes not backing down from his want and need for a Bearcat. He sees himself as being an effective Manager of his Department and an advocate for the personal safety of his Officers. Truthfully, I cannot fault him for pursuing a direction that he believes is right and yet at the same time after hearing me out and my concerns he also sees how set I am in my view that the acquisition of a LENCO BEARCAT is nothing but the militarization of our Police Department. SO....YOU WOULD ALL THINK THAT WE ARE AT AN IMPASSE, RIGHT? Not so! We boiled it down to whether this vehicle was a weapon or transport. I indicated to the Chief that a vehicle with an armored manhole on the roof that has a shooting hole and shooting holes on both sides of the body was an assault vehicle much like a tank would be! Chief Morency then asked me if he were to weld the shooting holes closed would that be more palatable to me and to the ones joining me in opposition to this BEARCAT...Ill be honest and say that it goes a long way toward meeting in the middle but there were other issues to consider as well. Those issues will be disseminated at the meeting at Teabirds on December 29th. This whole issue is not resolved. We joked that the people at LENCO will think he might have bumped his head when he called to ask them to make the vehicle without shooting holes. WE STILL NEED LOTS OF PEOPLE TO COME TO THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING.......THE LAST THING I WANT TO SEE IS A HALF EMPTY COUNCIL CHAMBER!
