OK. Ive had a virus and a flare and have been pretty sick the past few days. Sleeping tons. BUT. The film Whiplash finally came back into town. When the latest Hunger Games came out, they took up like 10 screens at Cinemark and bumped the smaller films out. You know, because they need 10 screens for The Hunger Games???? Hey, Im not knocking anyone who likes the Hunger Games movies but I didnt get to see Whiplash at that time because it was bumped out for one of the 7 million screenings of The Hunger Games. We finally got to see it tonight at Cinemark since its back in the theaters because it was nominated for various categories for the Oscars. WHIPLASH IS INCREDIBLE. Amazing. Awesome. But the lead actor, Miles Teller, was not nominated. So here is my Oscar/Academy rant that probably no one will care about but Im going to rant and rave anyways. Who are these people in the Academy that vote on who is nominated? It is a joke! Do they even watch the screeners to make an appropriate decision??? Miles Teller was absolutely phenomenal and he was not even nominated. I saw him in The Spectacular Now, which is on Amazon Prime streaming, and he was great. For a relatively new actor, he has a subtle and mature quality to his acting. But in Whiplash he was just incredible. Especially since he did not even know how to play the drums before he started filming. Among the other snubs were almost all categories for Gone Girl which was another fantastic film (Rosamund Pike was nominated...thank goodness because she was great). Jake Gyllenhaal was not nominated for his crazy performance in Nightcrawler which is just puzzling. At the very least Birdman was nominated for a bunch of categories which is well deserved. And Whiplash is nominated for a handful of categories including Best Picture and Best Supporting actor J.K. Simmons, who was also outstanding. I will stop ranting now and eat a cookie.
