OK. Just back from the Mebane Historical Society meeting which featured the model train exhibit. Wow! Here (Second and Jackson Streets in Mebane) we have the train set-up left in his will by Tommy Long, a Mebane law professor, to the City of Mebane when he died (about 2002). Here is a room about 50 feet long and perhaps 14 feet wide with most of that being occupied by a huge table perhaps four feet high and on it a miniature world of buildings, train tracks, bridges, tunnels and a carnival. Seven trains can run on three levels at the same time and when they do you are just overwhelmed. They all make train noises. All the trains are accurate models of engines and train cars, passenger and freight, that were at one time or another actual historical railroad equipment. So nice to see railroad cars not covered in graffiti. Someone asked if it was finished and the answer comes to "No, I doubt if it will EVER be finished..." No kidding, this is really cool and you have to check it out. Call the Museum or City Hall to find out when it is open and come to see it!
