OK fans, we need help. I am used to horrible things. It is a sad state of affairs when I get shocked by something I see in animal rescue. This is one of those times when I am near to speechless. For those who do not live in the South, it may come as a surprise to learn that there are whole swaths of the rural South that have no animal control facility. In Tennessee alone, fully half the counties in the state have no animal control facility. That lack of a basic government service has some pretty horrific consequences. This is one of them. Last week, a situation was brought to our attention and we were told there were four Great Pyrenees living with an 81 year old woman and she could not care for them. We were told one was in bad shape because it had been attacked by a coyote. That got our attention and we got there with all speed. On arrival to the womans home, the situation was not what we expected. This picture is of one Great Pyrenees. This is the one in the best condition. The rest are too graphic to post. There was no coyote attack. These dogs (and there are many, many dogs), have sarcoptic and demodectic mange. All of them have been suffering with it for years. The father of this dog was found in the house which is unspeakably unsanitary living under a bed with oozing sores and no fur. We were told he got the mange about four years ago. The windows are open in her home so the chickens can come and go from the house. You can imagine what it looks like. The farm animals have mange and the cats have mange. Everything in the house has mange. Including the 81 year old woman most likely although we could not examine her. This lady is living in squalor with no electricity*. She cannot walk down the front steps to the yard and lives captive in the house. I cannot allow this to continue and I am taking steps now to address the womans plight, but again, services in this area are largely non-existent and help will have to be brought in and she does not see that anything is wrong with the way she is existing. We have stepped in to take the animals. She did not want to give them up and refused when we asked. She considers all of them her family members. So we bought her animals. She was excited that she might have enough money to be able
