OK, look, our understanding of the planets was relatively stable for centuries based on our limitations of observing them. But now were realizing that the outer regions of our solar system is swarming with huge chunks of planet-like objects. Dozens of them are larger than Pluto. How do we make sense of that? Dwarf planet was a reasonable first crack at the problem, but the cleared the neighborhood thing was rather hamfisted and imprecise, given that theres all kinds of crap floating around in the LaGrange points of all planets. Maybe we should just give up on this whole planet thing anyway. Each planetish body has its own unique characteristics and interesting things to study. Or we could just call all these round chunks of rock and gas planets but give up on the notion that we ever will know how many of them we have. Makes trivia difficult. How many planets are there in the solar system? Well, 65 that we know about, but there could be thousands. Im OK with that, but certain people are stuck on this NINE DAMN YOU ITS ONLY NINE thing.
