OK, one of the things that happens when you have emergency surgery - TopicsExpress

OK, one of the things that happens when you have emergency surgery is that you dont have all of the details. Now I have a more better idea of whats going on in my body. If you dont care, dont read. Otherwise, here we go. So, on Wednesday in the ER, they did a CT scan that showed I had a pretty big kidney stone (4-5 mm) that was obstructing the path between kidney and bladder and was causing a lot of pain and nausea. They recommended a visit to the urologist, who was very concerned about my creatinine levels, which were really high for a man my age in otherwise very good health. He recommended surgery to put in a stent to relieve the pressure and hopefully allow the stone (which could not be seen on the pelvic xray he took) to pass on its own. The surgeon on call said that it was silly to do the temporary stent when we could just shove a laser up there and break it apart and be done with it. So, that is what was scheduled for Sunday. They did that, but after the surgery they said that he didnt see the stone. Well, foolishly I thought that meant it had passed or had moved. Mostly because that is what the surgeon said at the time. I have a witness, my wife was there. I went to the urologist for a follow up today and he said that the stone was likely still there but that the surgeon had not shoved the laser mounted camera far enough up my ureter to find the stone, because he felt that would have been too dangerous, so he opted for the stent after all. The stent is going to be in for a couple of weeks. I have another CT scan on the 26th, to see if the stone is rolling or not and then an immediate follow up with the urologist to discuss options. Either way, there will be another surgery in early October. So, thats what I know, which isnt much. Except that I hate my strainer. And my body. If you can think thoughts of stone disintegration my way, I would appreciate it. And, again, thanks everyone for giving a crap. It means a lot to me. kidneystoneclinic.au/ureteroscopy.html
