OK, so I am currently attending Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, which is part of the PASSHE, or Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. It is the tenth-largest university system in the United States and 43rd largest in the world. The system comprises 14 state-owned schools, which enroll approximately 120,000 students. PASSHE institutions are the only colleges and universities in Pennsylvania that are publicly owned and governed, but they are not the only ones that receive public funding. Sound sgreat, right? However, due to budget cuts, my colleg, along with the other 13, are about to embark on an enormous round of faculty cuts and forced retirements. Additionally, they are doing these cuts with complete disregard to tenure status or seniority AND seem to be specifically targeting certain areas, engaging in what amounts to unauthorized curriculum-fixing. At my school alone, which only has approximately 180 professors, they are planning to cut about 30 positions, or 1/6 of the faculty. Meanwhile, they are building many new buildings, such as dorms, even though they claim enrollment is down. Additionally, at this point, many classes which are in the catalog, and I am paying for, are either not available, or only available online. So what do you all think, is this acceptable?
