OK so, here we have a Gibson ES-137 that a client brought me because he felt the neck was too thick and wanted it shaved thinner. When I measured it, I found that it was about 21.5mm thick at the first fret area, and got thicker, of course, toward the heel, with the 12th fret area measuring out at a whopping 25mm thick, front to back! What he wanted was a slimmer modern oval feel, and so thats what I shaved it to: 19mm at the first fret area, graduating to 20mm most of the rest of the neck with the final thickness at the 12th fret being 21mm. It also starts off as a nice slim C shape at the first fret area, graduating to a slightly flatter back as you go up, ending in a nice flat, modern oval shape around the 10th fret to the heel. After shaving and final sanding, I repainted it black, and then sprayed about 15 coats of satin lacquer, which I then wet sanded, compounded, polished and waxed, to a super slick, smooth feel that has a nice shine to it. After all that, I did a full setup with Darco 10s, with the action at about 1/16 at the 12th fret. She plays slick and fast, and has a killer tone. I think the client will be quite pleased.
