OK...this is gonna be long. If youre a football fan though, bare with me! First off...none of the players played well in this tournament. Couple of them had good spells but really thats about it. Steven Gerrard...I do love him. Liverpool legend. But hes had a TERRIBLE World Cup. The first Uruguay goal last night, the way he limply went into the tackle that led to it...its pretty embarrassing really. Hes the CAPTAIN. Imagine Patrick Vieira doing the same thing back in the day for France...would never happen. When I say it might be his time to retire from international football I dont feel like Im exaggerating. But this leads me to my next point. Gerrard had a great season for Liverpool, but for the most part it was in a 3 man midfield. So in a 2 man midfield, you cant really expect the same thing. The same for Henderson really. Weve just been knocked out of the World Cup as the FA have confirmed Roy Hodgson will stay on til 2016. He does not have a clue at international level. Wayne Rooney started on the left. Hes never played on the left in his life. Im not saying Rooney shouldnt be in the team...Im saying England dont and never really have had a system. Prime example is this...Colombia the other day. Left out star striker Martinez who bagged god knows how many goals for Porto this year, left out midfielder Guarin...the reason being they dont fit the system they were playing. And they won. Its all good saying you have to play your best player but he has to be in the right system. If youre not gonna play him in the right position, leave him out. Cant just stick him out on the left when hes never played there cos youre too scared to drop him. For the record, despite missing those 2 great chances, Rooney was probably our best player last night. Uruguay dont have better players than us...but they have a system. They know what theyre doing. And with England you just feel like theyre going out on the pitch as a bunch of individuals who need to work it out as they go along. Holland beat Spain 5-1...they started players such as Vlaar and De Guzman. Does that not say it all? OK, we dont have a couple of world class players like Holland do, and thats important too. But Costa Rica dont have any world class players either and theyve just got through an extremely tough group. What we need is a foreign manager (theres no good English ones) with IDEAS, a system he wants to play, and then to pick the best TEAM, not the best individuals. I am done.
