OK whats really going on? Is this just about a messy labour dispute? I really dont think so. What is it then? Could there be a bigger picture? I believe so. The ambition of this government appears to include a fragmented public school system, divided up by levels of service. Private schools for academics with vouchers for parents wanting this for their children. Public Charter schools to provide workers for resource development and thirdly, expanded online schooling for those who want it. This new and improved system will be served by three levels of instruction. Teachers who will be given the option of dropping out of the BCTF. Educators who will receive minimal training prior to going into classrooms to do job training and basic reading, writing and arithmetic. Thirdly Support Staff to work with Special Needs students. The province will be divided up into Regional Districts. These super districts will have a board of directors and a CEO. Charter Schools will be independent, run by a School Council and a Management Team. Support services will be contracted out. Clerical, Custodial and Maintenance to the lowest bidder. This is my prediction. Nothing more. Nothing less. However, my research leads me to firmly believe that this is the objective. The unwillingness to negotiate, the desire for labour unrest simply provides an opportunity to step in, say that the system is broken then announce sweeping legislation to fix it.
