OKLAHOMA CITY —Sen. Jim Inhofe announced Thursday his introducing of an amendment to the omnibus spending bill that would strike a provision of the bill blocking the United States Department of Agriculture from inspecting horse slaughter plants. According to a statement released by Inhofe, the provision blocking the inspections by the USDA effectively bans the horse slaughter facilities in the United States. I am very concerned that the omnibus appropriations bill includes a provision that blocks government inspection of horse processing facilities, effectively shutting down this industry, said Inhofe. Without these facilities, aging horses are often neglected or forced to endure cruel conditions as they are transported to processing facilities across the border. This provision is counterproductive to what animal rights activists are hoping to achieve through this provision. That is why I am offering an amendment to strike the provision, which would reinstate these inspections. Gov. Mary Fallin approved House Bill 1999 in March 2013. The bill legalized horse slaughter in Oklahoma which had been banned for 50 years. State records show more than 18,000 horses were shipped to Mexico slaughter houses in 2012. Under the law which took effect Nov. 1, 2013 any meat produced would be exported out of the US. Some animal rights groups were opposed to the passage of the law, calling it inhumane.
