********** OLD NASSAU ORCHARDS MARKET ********** Developed near Lewes in the 1950’s This abandoned market still remains standing just outside Lewes, Delaware off of New Road. It resides on Nassau Road near Coastal Highway. Nassau Orchard Market was the premier roadside market on the way to the beach for over 30 years. It was developed near Lewes in the 1950’s as a new enterprise for their orchard business. Halsey G. Knapp established the market to capture the emerging consumer base related to the beach resorts of Lewes and Rehoboth. (Picture courtesy Halsey G. Knapp). Leslie G. Knapp came to Delaware in 1920 and worked as an officer with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Nassau Orchards was originally started as a private investment by a group of railroad men. Knapp, a well-respected and successful businessman, eventually bought the company from the original investors.
