OMG: From Capital NY story RE life after NYT buyouts: Jim Norman was a copy editor for the Times for seven years. He decided to take a buyout, then talked with his wife and decided that we had stars in our eyes and we really couldnt afford to do it. Norman, as he was permitted to do, withdrew his buyout paperwork. Then he was laid off. He learned later that he was on a list of employees targeted for firing. I was seriously disappointed, he said. I thought they certainly could have signaled me. When it happened, then-managing editor John Geddes (who took a buyout last year) told Norman: I cant tell you how it broke my heart when you changed your mind. Norman estimated that he lost about $25,000 by pulling back his buyout. He was also unemployed for three years, though he ended up running a furniture repair business and eventually landed a job as a reporter for The Record.
