ON DOGMA and DOCTRINE Here is what Buddha had to say about dogma and doctrines: Do not be satisfied with hearsay or with tradition or with legendary lore or with what has come down in scriptures or with conjecture or with logical inference or with weighing evidence or with liking for a view after pondering over it or with someone elses ability or with the thought the monk is our teacher. When you know in yourselves: These things are wholesome, blameless, commended by the wise, and being adopted and put into effect they lead to welfare and happiness then you should practice and abide in them. ~The Buddha (One Who Has Awoken), Kalama Sutra. My approach to the Martial Arts is similarly... All of the various styles and approaches to martial arts is nothing more than someones opinion. Someone who had the force of will to convince others to follow him/her. This is how a path is created. At some point an adherent must break free of dogma and doctrine and choose the pathless path. Note: The term “Buddhism” has only been adopted since its first use in the 1816 Asiatic Journal and then only popularized by Edward Upham’s book The History and Doctrine of Buddhism. Buddha did not create Buddhism. The name he gave to what he discovered is Dharma Vinaya, meaning Mystic Law and Discipline (Teachings & Discipline).
