ON MEETING GORE VIDAL ON the EVE of War, holding hands with Alec Baldwin and getting shoved by Eva Marie Saint: I met him once at UCLA when he spoke on the Eve of War...day before we started the Shock and Awe Campaign - 2003. I was there to record the talk for my radio archives. Was it 11 years ago? and were still at war? Afterward I was to go backstage to get his signature on our speaker release and it was a madhouse. A huge crowd gathered at the stage door as if it was a rock concert. Alec Baldwin was there and was standing next to me. We had spoken on the phone before but never met. He read my paper over my shoulder and said, Youre Brian? Yes, I replied - before I realized it was him. He grabbed my hand and barreled through the crowd and got us back stage. IN the reception room were the muckedy-mucks swarming around Gore. Alec ...still holding my hand pushed through and kneeled before Gore. After their brief exchange Alec introduced me. BUT ...before I could speak...Actress Eva Marie Saint physically pushed me out of the way. Gore saw this and ever so politely but with his biting drawl...Dear...let the boy in. Ill get to you in a minute. HE spent more time with me...just to have Eva (in a tacky fur coat no less) wait longer. Thats my Gore Vidal love story.
