ON THE CALAMITY OF IGNORANT, RELIGIOUS ZEALOTS: Our complaint is to Allah concerning a people among whom we find ourselves. They do not know, and they do not learn, nor do they ask; and they will not accept the truth. They will not submit, and yet they will not hold their tongues. Each one of them is the most ignorant of fools, but he considers himself the most learned of scholars. Each one dares to issue formal legal opinions, though he does not possess the requisite knowledge of what is involved. He is quick to accuse others of unbelief (Kufr), though he does not know the definition of unbelief; nor does he know the threat involved in making such an accusation, since an authentic report has the Master of the Messengers (saws) saying: If someone says to his brother, O unbeliever!, one of the two is guilty of unbelief. In other words, if the one who is accused is not an unbeliever, it is the accuser who is the unbeliever! We seek refuge in Allah from ignorance. The Prophet (saws) also said: If someone says, The people have perished!, he is the one most surely doomed to perdition. —Shaykh al-Islam Ibrahim b.
