ON THIS DATE IN OUR HISTORY SEPTEMBER 5th 1859 Our Nig by Harriet E. Wilson was the first novel published by an African-American. 1877 Southern blacks led by Benjamin "Pap" Singleton settled in Kansas. 1916 Frank Yerby, author of popular historical fiction, was born. 1960 Léopold Sédar Senghor became the first president of the recently independent Republic of Senegal. 1960 In the Congo, President Joseph Kasavubu, at the urging of the Belgians, illegally dismissed Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba from office. Lumumba then brought his case directly to the parliament, which reaffirmed his post. In response, Kasavubu dismissed the parliament. 1967 President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Walter E. Washington the first Mayor-Commissioner of the District of Columbia. Washington was the first African-American chief executive of a major city. 1991 At the first national conference of the African National Congress (ANC) held inside South Africa after being banned for decades, Nelson Mandela was elected president while his lifelong friend and colleague, Oliver Tambo, who had led the organization from exile, became national chairperson.
