ON THIS DAY - 03/08/2002 - LONHRO wins the Missile Stakes - One of the best gallopers of the modern era LONHRO (Octagonal x Shadea) won his first start as a four year old when he took out the Group 3 Missile Stakes. LONHRO was resuming from a stellar three year old season which saw him undefeated in seven starts, winning a host of quality races including the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas. On the basis of his brilliant three year old form it was no surprise that LONHRO started an odds on favourite at 8/15 for his first assignment as a four year old. The Missile was also the start of a pairing with jockey Darren Beadman that would take LONHRO to the peak of Australian racing. Beadman settled the entire in the second half of the field and he was still in sixth position approaching the 400m mark but LONHRO displayed his customary brilliant finishing run to overpower the field and record a stunning 3 & 3/4 length win from 8/1 chance ANCIENT SONG (Canny Lad x Hello Lottie) with 50/1 outsider NOTOIRE (Export Price x Lady Violet) a long neck back in third. Whilst the Missile Stakes was Beadmans first ride on LONHRO they formed an almost unbreakable partnership for the remainder of the horses career with Beadman riding him in all but one of his subsequent starts. Together the pair recorded wins in numerous Group 1 races beating some of the best gallopers of the era. LONHRO had his last start in April 2004 when he ran 2nd to old foe GRAND ARMEE (Hennessy x Tambour) in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick. At the end of his career he had amassed stakes in excess of $5.3m from his 13 wins. LONHRO has been an outstanding success as a sire with his best progeny including champion two year old PIERRO (Lonhro x Miss Right Note) the classy and consistent mare BEADED (Lonhro x Subtle) and promising sires DENMAN (Lonhro x Peach) and OLONHRO (Lonhro x Mamzelle Pedrille). He currently stands at Darleys stud in Aberdeen NSW and is shuttling to Darleys stallion farm at Jonabell in Lexington, Kentucky.
