ON THIS DAY - December 26, 1947 BENDIGO Double Tragedy At Bendigo At an inquest at Bendigo into the deaths of Eileen Beatrice Gleeson, 44, married, and Alfred Lanzini, 46, miner, Mr D. Duggan, Coroner, found that Lanzini had murdered Mrs Gleeson and had wilfully inflicted wounds on himself to cause his own death. John James Gleeson, clerk, husband of the dead woman, said that Lanzini had gone to live at his place shortly after he went to reside in Barnard st. For a few years witness had not been living with his wife because of her association with Lanzini. On December 26 Mrs Gleeson had told Lanzini he was a nuisance. Lanzini replied, All right. If it makes no difference to you, Ill get out. About 7.45pm witness heard a scream. He saw his wife on her back with blood coming from her throat. Lanzini was standing over her, and was cutting at his own throat with a razor. First-constable J. F. Thouliss said that when he arrived at the Barnard st house Mrs Gleeson was dead, Lanzini had a throat wound, but was alive. In his right hand he was holding a blunt razor. Another razor which had a blade broken was found on his body. In the kitchen there was signs of a struggle having taken place. Lanzini was charged with having inflicted bodily harm on John J. Gleeson on December 25, and appeared in court on Boxing Day, when he was admitted to bail. Lanzini had lived at Gleesons house for about five years, and in that time police had been called to arguments between Lanzini and Gleeson.
