ON THIS DAY: In 1746 Clunys Regiment surrendered to the Earl of Loudoun. Ewen McPherson of Cluny was a captain in Loudons 64th Highlanders at the start of the ’45 Rising but he changed sides after being taken prisoner by Clan Cameron and he and his men formed the nucleus of a new Jacobite regiment. They joined the Jacobite army shortly after Prestonpans and fought throughout the English campaign. By Falkirk they may have numbered as many as 400 officers and men. The regiment did not fight at Culloden as they were unable to make it to the battlefield in time. It is said they were only a few miles away when they met the fugitives from the battle and they helped form the rear-guard of the retreat to Ruthven. A month later the majority of the regiment surrendered to Loudon but Cluny himself remained in hiding for many years in Clunys Cage before leaving for France in 1755.
