ONE NATION UNDER GOD It was not so many years ago that our young children began each day of school by standing and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. To mention the concept of the Republic in the same sentence with the term, God, was totaling in keeping with our nation’s heritage. In fact, when this country was in its infancy, the Declaration of Independence established the underpinnings on which the United States was formed. The authors, which numbered among them, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, saw fit to include mention of the Almighty on four different occasions, using varying terms: God, Creator, and Supreme Judge. At its conclusion, the writers determined that the country should resolve to place “a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence.” Yet, have we, as a nation, deviated from the path which was initiated long ago? It no longer seems permissible to mention God, even within our schools. In my small community of Abington, MA, children have been instructed that one cannot extend the courtesy of saying “God bless you” when a youngster sneezes. In other parts of our United States, high school students have been compelled to “fight” in order to be allowed to say a prayer before a graduation ceremony. Just last month, clerks in stores, banks and supermarkets were given instructions to say “Happy Holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas.”
