ONE PROTEST AND TWO TALKS TODAY. The photo is from today (Saturday); weather dried a bit later and a young Palestinian did some dancing for us and got others dancing too. He was really great. Then to Connolly Books: 3 speakers on We partied? THEY Partied, We Pay!, Dr. Conor McCabe, Prof. Kathleen Lynch and Gareth Murphy (TULF). I thought the first and third speakers were the most interesting. I found Kathleen Lynchs assertion that the Irish people had been manipulated into thinking that things were OK bizarre, tbh. Everybody I have spoken to, political or not, always says the situation is shite, but most dont have the confidence/ leadership to change it. I would have really loved to wait and discuss Gareth Murphys ideas (most of which in outline I thought were sound and refreshing) but had to go -- too many speakers or 1.45 hours is too long! I had to leave just as questions and contributions were being taken, in order to dash off to another talk (organised by the Stonybatter Local History Project), ///// about The Siege of the Four Courts with Liz Gillis, author of The Fall of Dublin. The talk was interesting and she has an amazing memory. It did seemto me that she had a bias against the Republicans in the Civil War but she did point out in a discussion about the destruction of records in the Four Courts that the British had discussed bombing it from the air and that the destruction of records could have been in the interests of a number of people, including Irish collaborators paid by the British state. She also agreed with me that the insurgents of 1916 and the IRA 1919-1921 had not gone to the people (my point was that the Republicans in 1922 were in essence continuing as they had before, as against an accusation often thrown at them that they were undemocratic). I bought her book The Fall of Dublin and look forward to reading it.
