ONION MOUNTAIN FIRE UPDATE.....QUICK HITTER Here is where we are at. Fire is now over 3000 acres in size. How much over is not known for sure and they are not going to make an estimate at it yet because an IR flight will happen tonight to remap the fire. Fire is moving to the north at this time. Fire activity has increased this afternoon, but the air tankers are operating mostly because the smoke that had been obscuring so much throughout the day has finally cleared out. Now that the air attack and the lead planes can see the targets...they will keep the tankers flying until just prior to dark. What the tankers are doing is working to shore up scratch lines that are in on the east side of the fire and also on the north side. This is also where the greatest potential risk to homes is at. NO homes are directly threatened at this time. NO evacuation orders are up at this time. There is a level 1 be ready evacuation advisory in effect for a specific area out there and it has not changed since that was issued. I have posted that information here in other posts. Rural Metro Fire has put a structural protection task force out on this fire as more of a just in case at this time. Pre positioning resources is a wise move. Regarding the hoax calls telling people to evacuate.....Incident Command and the Josephine County Sheriffs Department want to stress again that if an evacuation order is going to be given.....UNIFORMED deputies and Search and Rescue personnel will go door to door to give that information. It will NOT be delivered via a phone call. Phone calls telling you to leave are hoaxes. A rumor is buzzing that fire fighters had to deploy their fire shelters on this fire. Happily that rumor is not true at all at Onion Mountain. No fire fighters have had to face burn over situations where shelters would be deployed. In fact.....no fire fighters have been injured in any way on this fire so far. Considering the kind of terrain they are working in, that is pretty amazing that there have not even been sprained ankle type injuries, especially for the night shift crews.
