ONLY 30 HOURS LEFT!!!!!!!! 80% of Deaf people live in developing countries, and worldwide, only 17% receive an education. Isidore Niyongabo could have lost his chance for a good life in Burundi after losing his hearing in fourth grade to spinal meningitis. However, with hard work and the support of his family and teachers, he was able to succeed and is now a Masters student at the University of San Diego. Not all Deaf people in Burundi receive the same opportunities, though, so as a young man, Isidore set a goal: He would attend college in the United States, then return to Africa to support Deaf people. This summer he is fulfilling that goal by returning to East Africa with his organization, International Deaf Education Advocacy and Leadership (IDEAL) to lead a week-long summit in Uganda for 50 Deaf youth from Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. He and his team will empower the youth to become local leaders for Deaf people, starting a process of empowerment, education, and leadership that will spread to more than 12,000 Deaf and hearing youth in East Africa within three years. The applicants are motivated to make the most of the summit. "I hope that soon after the summit will be able to support deaf and somehow make the government change the policy towards people with disability in general. Also knowing how other young faced their problem and succeed its very important." Gaudiose, 24, Female, Burundi "The summit will help me become a better leader and role model in my community and also I will share the knowledge acquired to train other potential youths to be leaders in the community."
