ONLY A BRICK Only a brick, but it came from the school Where Pekin kids honored the Golden Rule; Where Pledge was never a dirty word, And a prayer or two could still be heard. Only a brick, but it once held a space In a wall that our city can never replace, Till a greedy developer came to our town And said that our school was coming down. Only a brick, overlooked till the day The rest of the rubble was hauled away. Now this one, saved, is reminder to me Of Pekin High Schools history. Developers come and developers go, But the Class of 60 will always know That, although the school we loved is gone, Our Pekin Chinks will still live on. No one can spoil or shame our name, For loyalty is still our game. © 2014 Lois J. Funk
