OPEN LETTER TO THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF AKWA IBOM STATE, CHIEF DR. GODSWILL AKPABIO. HIS EXCELLENCY, THREAT TO MY LIFE AS A RESULT OF ADVOCATING FOR ZONING IN ORUK ANAM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA. May I use this medium to thank you immensely for your numerous developmental strides and for transforming our dear state into a model State. Worthy of note is the free and compulsory education, the rehabilitation of our schools, hospitals, completion of Ibom international Airport, empowerment of our youths and massive construction of good road network in the state. Through this medium, I want to specifically commend your wife, Her Excellency, Ekaette Unoma Akpabio for her moral support towards the success of your administration, especially the building of houses for widows in all the 31 local government areas in the state. I pray the almighty God to richly reward your handiwork in Jesus mighty name. His Excellency, I want to draw your attention to the recent series of threat to my life, since I began the advocacy for zoning on the pages of the Guide Newspaper, a local tabloid in the state. In a particular edition of the paper, I had aligned myself with your declaration at the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party special convention that zoning should be observed in the forthcoming gubernatorial election. I also stressed that, in Oruk Anam Local Government Area, same should be applicable, so as to pave way for credible leaders. Since then, I have been bombarded by unknown calls from people who have threatened to maim, brutalize and kill me if I do not allow the Deputy Speaker Hon. Udo Kirien Akpan to repeat his stay in the hallowed chambers. Some of the threats that came in the form of text messages, I have received read thus, ‘you think we don’t know you, we have been paid 10 million naira to kill you, and we will do just that’, ‘if you know what is good, just shun our man, let him go for second term, else I will smoke you out of this planet’ ‘after I finish with you, you will know that Oruk Anam is owned by us’ among others. On the 14th September, an unknown number called me and threatened to use government apparatus and kill me. Due to these threats, I have relocated my family to an unknown destination for fear of being killed. As the chief security officer of the state, I plead with you to please save my soul from these evil men who are after my dear life. As a Nigerian, the constitution gives me the freedom of speech; hence, I see no reason why my life should be at stake for exercising my right within the ambit of the law. I am optimistic that you will look into this matter with a view of giving a lasting solution.
