OPN Update The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) - TopicsExpress

OPN Update The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) recently approved a request by Clemson Libraries for a one-year extension of the Open Parks Network grant. Grant activities for the OPN will now continue until September 30, 2014, which allows the OPN team time to digitize even more materials beyond the original 150,000 archival items described in the original grant. This extension also allows the OPN team to hire a National Parks Metadata Specialist to work on describing these collections. -Chris Vinson Over in the Digital Imaging Lab at the Depot, the diligent and hardworking scan technicians, under Darius Jone’s leadership, were able to produce another record setting number of images digitized AND Photoshopped: 12,000 images were scanned and over 11,000 images were processed in Photoshop for the month of May. This brings the total number of images scanned to 133,000, just 17,000 shy of the grant goal of 150,000 digitized in-house. Our outsource contract DCS in North Carolina has completed scanning and full transcription of 47,000 donor cards for Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site and is ready to pick up the other 130,000 cards for digitization this week. On the Internet Archive side of things with our bound material, we have passed 1,006,861 digitized pages this week. Thanks to Andrea Galbo, Bound Materials Coordinator, the IA scribes will have enough material to finish out the grant objective. Throughout the grant life, Clemson University has partnered with dozens of parks and institutions to bring this material and its usability to the world audience and to the parks professionals across the country. Congaree National Park will be providing funds and a student to work with Dave White, Environmental Informatics specialists for OPN, to enable users to upload their own content. The Digital Public Library of America’s launch included an exhibit titled “This Land is Your Land: Parks and Public Places” showcasing the amazing archival images from the parks we have digitized. On a more international scale, OPN staff have been working with the Global Tiger Initiative and the Smithsonian Institute on plans for an education portal.
