OPS releases winter sports schedules Events to feature junior high/high school basketball & wrestling By LARRY OWEN Times sports editor The Okmulgee Public Schools athletic department recently released the winter sports schedules for 2013-14. The winter sports season will feature wrestling and basketball at both the junior high and high school levels. This year, the OHS varsity basketball teams will be competing in the Big Eight Star Conference, which will feature county foes Morris and Beggs, as well as Kellyville, Eufaula, Checotah, and Haskell. The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will also face Hilldale, Preston, and Okemah in non-conference contests, as well as compete in two regular season tournaments in 2013-14. The junior high cage squads will kick things off on November 11-16 at the Henryetta Tournament. During the week-long tournament, the OMS squads will travel to Muskogee on November 12th for a showdown with the Hilldale Hornets and Lady Hornets. Other road trips in the month of November will include Checotah (Nov. 18) and the Beggs Tournament (Nov. 18-23). The Bullpups and Lady Bullpups will have their first home game on December 9th when Eufaula comes to town. The boys games will take place at historic Brock Memorial Gymansium on the OHS campus, while the girls games will be played at the Dwight Wilson Memorial Gymnasium on the OMS campus. On December 19th, the Bullpups will play host to Okemah at Brock Gym, while the Lady Bullpups will travel to the Panther Dome in Okemah. The OMS squads will open 2014 on the road, traveling to Eufaula on January 16th for a showdown with the Ironheads and Lady Ironheads. On January 27th, the OMS teams will be at home against Checotah. The boys games will take place at Brock Gym, while the girls games will be held at OMS gym. Three days later (Jan. 30), the Bullpups will play host to McAlester at Brock Gym, while the Lady Bullpups will be on the road at McAlester. The final four games for the OMS squads will feature three road games for the Bullpups - Feb. 6 @ Okemah, Feb. 10 @ McAlester, and Feb. 13 @ Beggs - and one home game - Feb. 20 vs Beggs. While the boys teams will be on the road the first three games in February, the Lady Bullpups will be playing at home. The OMS ladies will host Okemah and McAlester at Brock Gym and will welcome the Beggs Lady Demons to town in a county meeting at the OMS gym. The Lady Bullpups will close out their 2013-14 season at the Beggs Event Center in Beggs. The high school basketball season is scheduled to get underway on Tuesday, December 3rd when the Eufaula Ironheads and Lady Ironheads come to Brock Gym for the season-opening showdown amongst conference teams. The only other home game for the OHS squads will on December 20th against the Haskell Haymakers and Lady Haymakers. The other December games for OHS will include trips to Morris (Dec. 10), Beggs (Dec. 13), and Kellyville (Dec. 17). The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will begin the new year at the Henryetta Tournament on January 6-11, then will play host to the Okemah Panthers on January 14th. The OHS squads will also be play host to Checotah (January 17) and Kellyville (January 31) in the month of January, while the lone road game that month will be on January 28th at Checotah. The only other event in January for the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will be the annual Okmulgee County Basketball Tournament January 20-25 at their home court - historic Brock Gymnasium. The final month of the regular season will start with road trips to Preston (Feb. 3) and Eufaula (Feb. 7). The next two games in February for the OHS squads will be at home against county foes Beggs (Feb. 11) and Morris (Feb. 14), while the the last two regular season games will take place at Hilldale (February 17) and Haskell (February 18), respectively. The playoffs will begin with the district tournament on either February 21st or 22nd, followed by the regional tournament on February 27th through March 1st. The area tournament will take place on March 6-8, while the state tournament is slated for March 13-15. The first three rounds of the postseason will be played at various sites, while the state tournament will be played in the Oklahoma City area. Both the junior high and high school wrestling teams will open their 2013-14 season on December 2nd at home against Checotah. The other home opponents for the wrestling teams in December will be Tulsa East Central (Dec. 17) and Tulsa Edison (Dec. 19). The high school wrestlers will also do battle with Tulsa Hale on December 19th at Brock Gym. The junior high and high school wrestlers will compete in the annual Okmulgee Bulldog Classic tournament on December 13th and 14th at Brock Gym, while the high school squad will also compete in the Bixby Tournament on December 20th and 21st. The high school wrestling team will open the new year at the Inola Tournament on January 10th and 11th, then will travel to Chandler for the high school district tournament. Both the junior high and high school wrestlers will travel to Hulbert on January 16th, while the junior high squad will be at Chandler on January 21st for its district meeting. The junior high and high school wrestlers will travel to Vian on January 23rd, then head to Wagoner on January 31st and February 1st for the conference tournament. Both wrestling teams will be at home on February 4th when Cleveland pays a visit to Brock Gym, then the teams will split up on February 7th and 8th with the high school team competing at the Bishop Kelley Tournament and the junior high team competing at the junior high all-state. The OHS squad will return to Bishop Kelley on February 11th for a dual against the Tulsa school, then both teams will close out the regular season schedule February 13th at home against Quinton. For the high school wrestlers, the dual state tournament is set for February 15th, while the regional tournament is February 21st and 22nd and the state tournament will be held on February 28th and March 1st in Oklahoma City. The regional tournament site will be determined prior to the event. The start times for the high school basketball games will be as follows: Regular season games: 6:30 p.m. (girls); 8:30 p.m. (boys) There will be two junior varsity games played prior to each regular season game. Tournament games will be determined when the brackets are filled out at each tournament meeting. The junior high basketball games will begin at one of three times: 4:30 p.m., 5 p.m., or 5:30 p.m. There will be three games in each divison on each date: 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. The junior high tournament schedules will be determined when the brackets are filled out at each tournament meeting. The start time for the junior high and high school wrestling regular season matches will be at 6 p.m., while each touranment will begin at 12 p.m. on the first day of the event.
