OPSU: Start of a New Year for PBL By Danae Moore Goodwell, Okla. — After ending a very successful year with an awesome finish at the 2013 FBLA-PBL National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif., in June, OPSU PBL (Phi Beta Lambda) is at it again. The group of future business leaders hit the road on Friday, Oct. 4, for a Career Day trip to Amarillo, Texas. At the first stop, 2013 OPSU Graduate, Jeremy Richardson welcomed the students to The Happy State Bank in Amarillo. After a tour of the bank, PBL members were able to get a firsthand look at the Operations department as well as visit with loan officers working at the bank. The students gained insight into the Associate of Banker program that Richardson, a former OPSU business student and PBL member from Boise City, Okla., is currently working through. PBL students enjoyed lunch followed by an office tour with CPAs and accountants at Brown, Graham, & Company P.C. and some of their partners. Meagan Bell, OPSU student and PBL member, interned at the Brown, Graham, & Company P.C. office in Spearman, Texas, over the 2013 summer. Bell said, It was nice to see another side of the company. I got the same friendly feeling and it confirmed my decision to be a tax accountant. To end the day, the PBL members visited Texas Cattle Feeders Association. The students were able to meet with the CEO, Marketing Director and Regulation Director as well as the Directors of Accounting, Information Technology and Human Resources. The business professionals discussed their careers, the process of getting to the point where they currently served and described a normal day of work in their field. Students who attended the trip include: Meagan Bell of Happy, Texas; Colton Blume of Cheyenne, Okla.; Colby Cochran of Loveland, Colo.; John Costner of Guymon, Okla.; Johnnie Ehninger of Goodwell, Okla.; Abraham Guzman of Guymon, Okla., Rhonda Harkins of Guymon, Okla; Jaxon Meardon of Springfield, Colo.; Marivel Medina of Guymon, Okla.; Idfonso Medina of Guymon, Okla.; Jorge Moreno of Texhoma, Okla.; Zach Patton of Dallas, Texas; and Tim Wheaton of Lamar, Colo. Advisers Davin Winger, Assistant Professor of Business Administration, and Sara Hitch, Assistant Professor of Business Administration, took the students. Winger and Hitch thought the trip was a great way to expose the students to a wide variety of career options in the Texas Panhandle.
