ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING FILLS GYMNASIUM - The Community Journal, March 24, 2014 Approximately 400 members of the Garrettsville community gathered at the high school for a meeting conducted by former Portage County Commissioner Tommie Jo Marsilio. The purpose was to address the needs of the business owners and their employees along with matching the support of volunteer efforts with the areas requiring help. Attendees broke off into four groups: those in need of employment assistance; those who wish to participate in the fundraising efforts; the group of business owners affected by the fire; and a group of community members who wish to help with volunteer tasks. Ohio Means Jobs/Portage County was on hand with the goal matching employers with those who lost their job as a result of the fire. Fundraising efforts will be led by Michelle Zivoder of the Weekly Villager and streamlined though the Garrettsville Area Chamber of Commerce. This impressive group of community members in this group brought numerous ideas and shared them among the group. Marsilio met with the business owners. She assured them that she will find the answers to any question they may have. Whether it be sorting out insurance issues, legal or government processes, or any other concern or need they may have. The fourth group, led by Christine Pitsinger of the Community Journal consisted of nearly 60 community members who want to help. Names, contact information and any special skills they wish to volunteer were collected throughout the group and will be categorized. This group of generous individuals will then be matched with the area of need. The support thus far is tremendous. Marsilio announced all businesses affected will have a location for phone and internet services provided to them at no charge. Local business owner and former Portage County Commissioner, Chris Smeiles has offered his retail space on Highland Avenue in the village to house this service as well as warehouse space available also at no charge. At the meetings end, business owners left with assurance that they are not alone and that Garrettsville will rebuild. Anyone seeking additional information is encouraged to contact Marsilio at tommiemarsilio@gmail.
