ORLANDO ABBADINI Obituary Orlando J. Lundo O.J. Abbadini, 90, of Fredericktown, Richeyville area, died Sunday, July 20, 2014, in Washington Hospital. He joins his wife of 66 years Ann DellaRocili, who passed away August 9, 2010. Mr. Abbadini was born April 28, 1924, in Vestaburg, a son of the late Joseph and Rita Rettini Abbadini. He was a 1942 graduate of East Bethlehem High School and attended Washington & Jefferson College. In February 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in January 1946. He was a member of the U.S. Armys famous Island Hopping Amphibious Engineers. He served in New Guinea, Northern Solomons Luzon, Philippines, and was among the first troops to land in Japan after the peace treaty. For his service, he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with three bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Arrowhead and the WWII Victory Medal. Mr. Abbadini was a life member of Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391, Fredericktown, and was a charter member of the former Vestaburg Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a life member of St. Michaels Archangel Church, now St. Oliver Plunkett Parish of Fredericktown. He served as a trustee and former president of the Holy Name Society for 75 years. Mr. Abbadini was also a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5826, Bentleyville, and a fourth-degree member of Assembly 911 Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 494 of Charleroi and the Sons of Italy, Brownsville. Mr. Abbadini, along with his brothers, Jerry and Robert, founded and operated Abbadini Restaurant and Bar, Bentleyville, for 28 years. He served as an umpire in Washington County for 10 years and he is the last of the umpires who worked the first Pony League World Series in Washington. Mr. Abbadini worked for a Washington County legislator in Harrisburg during the 1960s. His assignment and adventurous spirit took him to St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, where he and his partners built and operated the first and only roller-skating rink and dance hall, the Princess, for two years. Mr. Abbadini was a retired Federal Coal Mine inspector and supervisor, with 20 years of service. Gardening and sports, including football, baseball, swimming, lacrosse and basketball, brought him special enjoyment. He never missed a Steelers or Pirates game. He enjoyed telling stories of his life and was particularly proud of his heritage. Winemaking was another of his interests. Surviving are three children, Pat Cook (Dave) of Chicago, Ill., Bernie Pagac (Fred) of Buffalo, N.Y., and Mark Abbadini (Kathy) of Richeyville; six grandchildren, Kristyn Turner (Jim), Karrie Crocker (Chris), Kelly Cook, Jennifer Wieden (Adam), Freddie Pagac (Stephanie) and Aaron Abbadini; six great-grandchildren, Isabel, Alessandra and A.J. Wieden, Cydney Crocker and Landon and Bradyn Pagac; brother-in-law Tom Dellirocili (Jeannette) of Brownsville; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are two brothers, Jerry and Robert Abbadini. Friends will be received from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where a blessing service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, July 24, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, Fredericktown, with the Rev. Paul Grunebach as celebrant. Interment will follow in Beallsville Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Hanson Cole American Legion Post 391, Fredericktown. A Knights of Columbus Service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home followed at 7:30 p.m. by a parish vigil service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, P.O. Box 638, Fredericktown, PA 15333.
