#OTD 1944, Navy pilot George H.W. Bush was shot down in action during a bombing run over the Japanese-controlled island of Chichi Jima. After drifting for several hours, Bush was finally rescued by the patrolling submarine USS Finback. Unfortunately, the two other Avenger crew members, Radioman Second Class John Delaney, and Lieutenant Junior Grade William White, were killed in action.
