OUR LADY OF SORROWS September 15, 2014 The feast dates back during the time of St. Anselm and the Benedictines in the 11th century. The Servite Order in 1238 took Mary, standing by the Cross of Christ as their principal devotion. The Cistercians promoted it extensively in the 14th and 15th centuries and made it known worldwide. The first real celebration of the feast was enacted in 1482 by the Synod of Cologne to expiate the crimes of the iconoclasts Hussites. The object of the feast was the spiritual martyrdom of the Mother of God and her compassion with the sufferings of her Divine Son. The feast was inserted in the Missal under the title Our Lady of Compassion. The feast underwent several changes in the dates of observance until Pope Pius X fixed the permanent date of September 15 as the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. It falls on the day after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. We particularly remember in this feast the events in Marys life which gave her unspeakable sorrow.
