OXFORD — In support of a local woman facing a battle against brain cancer, there will be a benefit concert on the lawn at Mitcham Farm this weekend. Shane Millwood as well as Josh Millwood & IdleWild South and Drew & More will put on a concert from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the farm located at 797 Macedonia Church Road in Oxford. Admission is $5 and children under the age of 2 are admitted free. All money raised will benefit Lori Kines Ellis who discovered in May that she had a bleed on her brain and the report revealed it was cancerous. She underwent surgery to remove the tumor, but just a few days later the family was told it was Stage 4 of glioblastoma brain cancer, the most aggressive and infiltrative type of cancer. Kim Floyd and Adrienne Harper, who met Ellis at the ball field watching their children play baseball, decided to host this benefit understanding first hand how destructive brain cancer can be. Floyd said she lost her father just four weeks ago to the battle of brain cancer. “We met Lori because her husband Floyd was coaching my son and Harper’s son, so when we heard about her diagnosis we wanted to help,” Floyd said. “I just lost my father to brain cancer so it’s special to our hearts to help someone who is going through the same thing.” Floyd said Harper lost her father to the same brain cancer about a year ago. While the concert will benefit Ellis, Floyd said the event will also be in memory of their fathers. “We would love for anyone in the community to come out and enjoy this concert. There’s a lot of people in Newton who have experienced different bouts of cancer, and people have been so helpful,” Floyd said. “I’m in awe and amazed as to how many calls we’ve received already of people asking how they can help.” The concert benefit will also have barbecue plates available for $8 as well as a concession stand and inflatables for children. T-Shirts and bracelets in support of Ellis will be available for purchase. The family has also started a gofundme account at gofundme/95uucg to raise $5,000 to assist in medical bills, medical equipment, home improvements to accommodate this new disability, new doorways to accommodate a wheelchair, a walk-in shower, new hospital-type bed and family travel expenses. For more information about the concert, contact Kim Floyd at 678-265-0807.
