Oachira is a small town in the border of Kollam and Alappuzha dists in the NH_47 route. The Param Brahmam temple is an ancient pilgrimage centre where the deity is actually the Ohmkaram, the Universal Consciousness. The temple premises covers thirty-six acres of land. Oachira Kali is celebrated in commemoration of the battle of Kayamkulam, fought between Marthanda Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore and the Raja of Kayamkulam, on the plains of Oachira. The mock fight is enacted between groups of men dressed as warriors on the padanilam (battlefield). They perform a martial dance standing in knee-deep water, brandishing awords and shields.and splash water in every direction. A big cattle fair is also held as part of the festival. Oachira Kala ( bull bestowed to temple nowadays bulls are not left in the temple but those practice this as a living will take bulls to the pilgrimage and take it back). According to history when Travancore attacked, the small contingent of Kayamkulam soldiers sought help of civilians and all young and old men helped them to fight against the juge regiment of Travancore and sacrificed their life. Though lost the war, the society in Oachira followed to learn the war tacties and martial arts which they displayed at the anniversary of the lost war…. The war on Mithunam 1st and 2nd which they have marked in their heart the prick of which is carried from generations to generations…..
